# Docs MCP Server

> Connect Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible AI agent to the Spree docs MCP server to search and read the latest documentation while building.

Spree hosts a [Model Context Protocol](https://modelcontextprotocol.io) server on top of this documentation. Once connected, your agent can search the docs and read full pages on demand — answering questions from the latest published documentation instead of stale training data.

```text theme={"theme":"night-owl"}
https://spreecommerce.org/docs/mcp
```

The server exposes two tools: full-text **search** across the documentation, and **reading** doc pages as Markdown.

<Note>
  This server is about Spree's documentation, not your store. To let an agent
  work on your own catalog, orders and settings, see the
  [Admin MCP server](/docs/developer/mcp/overview) — the same protocol, hosted
  by your application and authenticated with one of your API keys.
</Note>

## Setup

In a [create-spree-app](/docs/developer/create-spree-app/quickstart) project, one command connects Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code at once, and installs the [agent skills](/docs/developer/agentic/agent-skills) too:

```bash theme={"theme":"night-owl"}
npx spree add ai            # skills + docs MCP server
npx spree add ai --no-skills  # docs MCP server only
```

It adds the server to `.mcp.json`, `.cursor/mcp.json` and `.vscode/mcp.json`, keeping any servers those files already list, and points the project's `AGENTS.md` at it. Running it again changes nothing. Commit the files so your team gets the same setup.

To connect a single tool by hand, or one outside a create-spree-app project:

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Claude Code">
    ```bash theme={"theme":"night-owl"}
    claude mcp add --transport http spree-docs https://spreecommerce.org/docs/mcp
    ```

    Scope it to the project (`--scope project`) to share the connection with your team via `.mcp.json`, or keep the default local scope for just yourself.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Claude.ai / Claude Desktop">
    Go to [Settings → Connectors](https://claude.ai/settings/connectors), click **Add custom connector**, and paste the URL:

    ```text theme={"theme":"night-owl"}
    https://spreecommerce.org/docs/mcp
    ```
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Cursor">
    Add to `.cursor/mcp.json` in your project (or `~/.cursor/mcp.json` globally):

    ```json theme={"theme":"night-owl"}
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "spree-docs": {
          "url": "https://spreecommerce.org/docs/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
    ```
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="VS Code (Copilot)">
    Add to `.vscode/mcp.json` in your project:

    ```json theme={"theme":"night-owl"}
    {
      "servers": {
        "spree-docs": {
          "type": "http",
          "url": "https://spreecommerce.org/docs/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
    ```
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Other tools">
    Any MCP client that supports remote servers over streamable HTTP can connect — point it at `https://spreecommerce.org/docs/mcp`. No authentication is required.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

## When to use MCP vs the other doc channels

| Channel | Best for |
| - | - |
| **MCP server** (this page) | The latest published docs; agents working outside a scaffolded project; questions the installed skills don't cover |
| **[`@spree/docs` npm package](/docs/developer/agentic/llm-docs)** | Fast local reads inside a project — no network round-trip, works offline, pinned to what you installed |
| **[Agent skills](/docs/developer/agentic/agent-skills)** | Conventions and how-to knowledge the agent should apply without searching at all |
| **[Admin MCP server](/docs/developer/mcp/overview)** | Not docs at all — operating a real store: its catalog, orders, reports and settings |

<Note>
  New [create-spree-app](/docs/developer/create-spree-app/quickstart) projects come connected (skip it with `--no-docs-mcp`) — Claude Code asks you to approve the server the first time you open the project. The project's `AGENTS.md` tells agents to search here and read pages from the local `@spree/docs` package, which matches the Spree version the project runs.
